Google has launched an app called 'WifiNanScan' on the Play Store. The special thing about this app is that it can connect to other devices without the internet. This means it's about to be the most delusional time of the year, as well. However, this app is currently launched for developers. The app can also measure the distance between 2 smartphones using the Wi-Fi Aware protocol.

App-only available to developers

The WifiNanScan app has been specially designed as a research, demonstration, and testing tool for developers, vendors, and universities to conduct experiments on the app.

The app will be able to measure distances from 1 to 15 meters

Google said that this app it can accurately measure the distance between devices from about 1 to 15 meters. Developers, OEMs, and inventors can use the WiFi Aware / NAN API-based Find My Phone and Contest Aware application development tool to measure the range with peer to peer ranging and transfer. This app was first tracked by tech site 9to5Google.

Compared to Bluetooth you will get more range

Wi-Fi Aware Network has a much longer range than Bluetooth. This allows users to share data with each other. Developers can use this technology to find nearby devices and users in their app. The new WifiNanScan app has been listed for free download on the Google Play Store under the Tools category.

What is Wi-Fi Aware?

Known as Wi-Fi Aware NAN (Neighbor Awareness Networking). This protocol is supported on all devices of Android version 8.0 and above. This protocol allows these devices to find and share data with each other without an Internet connection.

Google has launched such an app before

This app is similar to Google's WifiRttScan app 2 years ago. This app can find an indoor locations with accuracy in the range of 1-2 meters using compatible WiFi RTT access point. It is used for indoor locations where GPS is not available.
